Founder & Principal
Christine Ma-Lau is the Founder and Principal of JEMS Learning House, a leading educational institution that provides Character Education to children up to the age of twelve. She created the school out of her passion for educating young people in character and values, believing that, as Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education”. She is also the Founder and Chairperson of Character Education Foundation, the organisation that leads the annual citywide Character Day campaign that invites schools, organisations and companies to take part in celebrating and developing character strengths.
Christine is an Adjunct Professor at The Education University of Hong Kong and is also an Advisor to the Centre for Religious and Spiritual Education at the institution. Christine holds a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Pennsylvania with a concentration on child development and a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Philosophy from the London School of Economics. Prior to that, she attended Wycombe Abbey School in England and international schools in Hong Kong.
As an expert in Character Education, Christine is a sought-after speaker for a range of audiences. In addition to hosting talks and workshops for students, she has also led parenting talks on a range of topics and hosted teacher and social worker training sessions. She has spoken at The University of Hong Kong, The Education University of Hong Kong, St. Paul’s Co-Educational College, St. Stephen’s College and International Christian School, to name a few.
Her passion for educating children goes beyond her work at JEMS. Christine also served as a Director at Plan International Hong Kong, which promotes education to underprivileged children globally and is also their ambassador for their Because I Am A Girl campaign, which aims to promote education and opportunities for underprivileged girls worldwide. She is also a Board Director of Sow Asia and a Founding Director of GeneroCity, both Hong Kong-based philanthropy funds that helps the underprivileged in the city.
School Development Manager
Connie Mak passionately believes in empowering young children and in equipping them with character, compassion, and value. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Studies from the Claremont Colleges with a concentration in Economics. Formerly working with the cosmetics powerhouse, Estee Lauder Companies, Connie brings about an extensive knowledge in branding and business development. Earlier in her career, she worked at marketing the Estee Lauder brand, from which she then moved into Sales & Development for brands, such as Clinique, Origins, and Aveda in the Travel Retailing Greater China regions.
Connie is no stranger to teaching. She conducted Process Development Trainings within the Estee Lauder Companies and had also been invited to speak at The University of Hong Kong. In her spare time, Connie enjoys teaching Sunday school classes, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
Frances Boa is the administrative manager at JEMS. She has over seven years of experience working as a general manager and customer service manager in the education field. She was raised in Hong Kong and studied at the University of Sydney. She has worked with children of all ages and has a natural gift of interacting with them. She works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the smooth-running of JEMS. On her days off, Frances loves exploring new places, traveling and trying new foods.
Phoebe Lai is the friendly voice on the phone at JEMS. She is the front office receptionist and has been a part of the JEMS family since it first started in 2009. Phoebe is wonderful with children as she has two of her own and takes care of our students and parents alike. For any JEMS-related question that needs answering, just ask Phoebe. In addition to her gifts of administration and working with people. Phoebe also loves trying new restaurants and baking with her two girls at home.
Daisy Mak has a strong passion for education, and channels her enthusiasm towards educating young children. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and a TEFL certificate from the United States. Daisy has extensive experience in teaching students of ages 6 months to 16 years in different learning institutions and schools in Hong Kong. She was raised in both Hong Kong and the United States.
Stephanie Tang is a gifted and energetic teacher. She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and recently moved to Hong Kong to take up her post as a teacher at JEMS. She has had many years of experience overseas in working with children, teenagers and families. Stephanie is also very talented in photography, playing the guitar and doing a variety of sports. She hopes to use her gifts and talents to help and inspire young people.
Sherry Cheung holds a Master’s Degree of Education specialising in Educational Psychology from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, and Management & Human Resources from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Sherry has experience in teaching children with special needs and spent 4 years in managing the Children’s Ministry and working with children and families at Evangelical Community Church Hong Kong. In her free time, she likes to watch cooking shows, explore local good eats with her family and friends, and also travel around the world.
Tiffany Leung is a fun and compassionate teacher. She wishes to discover the potential in each student and inspire good character that
will lead them to success. She was raised both in Canada and Hong Kong and studied at the University of Toronto and Ryerson University. Tiffany is a talented artist and in her spare time she likes painting and designing her home decorations.
Regine Chung is a passionate and caring teacher. She wishes to build trusting relationships with children and parents and help children establish solid foundation in good character. Regine holds a Master’s Degree of Counselling from City University of Hong Kong with a concentration on children and youth counselling and has taught in kindergartens, secondary schools, and private educational centres before joining JEMS. In addition, Regine holds a Diploma in Play Therapy and received standard play therapy training by approved-provider of Association for Play Therapy (USA). The experience in play therapy helps Regine understand children’s inner world and provide guidance to meet every child’s need. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking and running with her family and friends.
Sandi Cheng believes each child is unique and talented, and that building up character at an early age is the key to success in life. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English language education from The Education University of Hong Kong and has taught students aged 6-12 in a local primary school before joining JEMS. She also has experience in teaching kindergarten students drama in a musical learning centre. In her free time, she enjoys playing piano for a band at church.
Yumana Lau has a great passion to work with children and is creative in providing a fun and safe learning environment for her students. She believes it is important to cultivate children’s interest to learn and to continue to be curious about what’s happening in the world and in life. Learning is a fun life-long process and it is important to develop good values and a strong character to grow and overcome any challenges in life. Yumana strives to inspire and encourage her students in class. Yumana is from Hong Kong and received her education in Canada. She holds a degree in Bachelor of Arts from Ryerson University, Toronto. In her spare time, she enjoys to explore the city and spend quality time with her family and friends.
